It captures locations in (Ireland) Gartan, Gleann Cholm Cille, Derry, Magilligan, Drumcliff, Kells, Dublin and (Scotland) Iona and Oban.

This short film was launched at the start of Colmcille 1500. Representing the Churches Trust, the Church leaders in Derry and Donegal came together to discuss the importance of Columba 1500 years on, why he is still relevant today and why we should celebrate him.

A new composition by Irish electronica artist Ryan Vail to re-imagine Benjamin Britten’s ‘A Hymn for St. Columba’. Originally commissioned in 1962 to commemorate the 1400th anniversary of Colmcille’s voyage to Scotland, this reinterpretation is a contemporary mix of electronic and traditional instrumentation, accompanied by beautiful drone footage.

1962 DERRY – Téann Aindréas Ó Gallchóir ar lorg Cholm Cille i nDoire
A clip from the RTÉ Archives in 1962 when Aindréas Ó Gallchóir retraced the steps of Colmcille as part of a programme ‘Tá Cuimhne ar Cholm Cille’ (I Remember Colmcille). The clip is in Irish and shows places in Derry associated with Colmcille, including St Columb’s Well and the Long Tower Church.

1963 COMMEMORATIONS | Celebrations & Curragh to Iona
The 1400th anniversary of Colmcille’s departure from Ireland to Scotland was marked in 1963. This film tells the story of Colmcille’s life with footage of events that took place during 1963 (Gartan, Raphoe, Derry and Co. Down) and the voyage to Iona.

1963 COMMEMORATIONS | Curragh to Iona
This film covers the special commemorative voyage from Derry to Iona in 1963 co-ordinated by the Church Of Ireland, where 13 young men recreated Columba’s 100 mile journey on a replica curragh built by Donegal man Jim Boyd.

AUDIT OF COLUMBAN HERITAGE
An audit of heritage sites (Donegal & Derry), objects, and archives associated with Colmcille and his life. Commissioned by Donegal County Council, Derry City & Strabane District Council, Foras na Gaeilge and the Heritage Council in 2018 to help plan for the 1500th anniversary.

COLMCILLE: ÉIRINN IS ALBA
Colmcille is a partnership programme between Foras na Gaeilge (Ireland) and Bòrd na Gàidhlig (Scotland), promoting the use of Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic. The website also includes information on areas linked to Colmcille across ireland and Scotland to enable people to follow in his footsteps (Slí Cholmcille/St Columba’s Trail).

SLI CHOLMCILLE CAMINO
A legacy project to establish a pilgrimage and walking route linking sites associated with Colmcille, initially in Donegal and Derry, with the ambition to connect across Northern Ireland and to Scotland. A range of resources relating to Colmcille were brought together here in advance of the 1500th anniversary including educational, spiritual, academic, heritage and community as well as covering local, regional, national and international.

COLMCILLE HERITAGE CENTRE (GARTAN)
This heritage centre is located in Colmcille’s birth place in Gartan, County Donegal. His story is told with stained glass, illustrated panels and artefacts. Contact the centre for current opening arrangements /for access to the building.

ÁRAS CHOLMCILLE/ ST COLUMBA’S HERITAGE CENTRE (DERRY)
The heritage centre is based in a 19th-century school building on the grounds of Long Tower Church, near the site where St. Columba founded his first monastery in Derry.
